On Monday, March 29, 2004 IMV experienced the complete loss of the main hard drive on their corporate accounting server. The timing could not have been worse. With payroll and 1st quarter financial reports due at the end of the month they were in a major crisis. They needed to get a new hard drive, re-install the O/S and all applicable software and reload the accounting SQL databases from their backups. They have used a tape backup solution for years and had recently added the DataAssure off-site data backup to provide a redundant backup solution. They felt pretty confident that restoring their data would be an uneventful process.
The new hard drive arrived from Dell on Tuesday and was reconfigured with the O/S and applicable software applications. They started the restore of the backup tapes to recover the accounting SQL databases only to find that the tapes had not properly backed up the SQL databases in over 3 months. The backup tape solution that they had been relying on for years to backup and restore critical company files had completely failed to solve a major problem.
They were faced with potentially having to re-create all of their accounting records from the beginning of the year. Thousands of entries and hundreds of man hours awaited the accounting department if they could not restore the databases.
The company's most valuable resource is its proprietary health-care/medical and accounting databases. They made a corporate decision to institute a cost-effective redundant backup solution that would store their data in a secure off-site location outside of their current region. In essence, the DataAssure solution became the corporate disaster recovery solution for mission critical information.
Once the tape backup solution failed to solve their problem, they turned to their recently implemented DataAssure secure off-site backup solution. Within 5 minutes they were able to find and restore the most recent generation of their SQL accounting databases. After the files were restored and tested for accuracy and completeness, they discovered that the frequency of their backup schedule had allowed them to capture every single accounting entry that had been made to date.
Within a 24 hour period they were able to completely rebuild the accounting server, restore their databases and meet their payroll and financial reporting deadlines. Thanks to the online recovery capability of the DataAssure solution.
